Limerick/Clare Irish Science Teachers Association AGM

Timetable for the Evening

7.00 – 7.15:     Review of the Year, Treasurers Report, Election of Officers and AOB

7.15 – 8.00:     Presentation: ‘Strategies for the development of numeracy and literacy in Junior Certificate Science classes’

Mr. Rory Geoghegan will outline a number of useful techniques for the development of numeracy and literacy through Junior Certificate Science.  This will complement the Department of Education’s National Literacy and Numeracy Strategy.

8.00 – 8.15:     Tea/Coffee Break

8.15 – 9.00:    

Option 1: Introduction to Nanotechnology
Marie Walsh, Limerick Institute of Technology will go back to basics and introduce nanotechnology for the beginner. She will outline activities that can be used in Transition Year Science and also link it to the proposed nanotechnology section of the new Leaving Certificate Chemistry syllabus. 

Option 2: Electrophoresis for Biology

Mary Morin, Limerick Institute of Technology will outline how electrophoresis can be used in the Biology class and demonstrate cheaper alternatives that can be used for Leaving Certificate Biology. This presentation will take place in the laboratory.
