Science Week in LIT 2012
Over two thousand primary and secondary school students and teachers visited various Science Week events in LIT. This years theme was Everyday Experimenting and LIT science staff, students and researchers joined science presenter Sue McGrath and representatives from the Royal Society of Chemistry to show both a fun and a serious side to experimenting.
The week began with a Chemistry Demonstrations workshop for teachers in association with the local branch of the ISTA. Dr Anne O'Dwyer from NCE-MSTL, aided by Aisling Flanagan from LIT, showed the teachers how to engage their students with some exciting flash-bang experiments.
LIT undergraduates hosted two days of science circuit experiments for primary schools, followed by the postgraduates Science Magic Show. The second day ran parallel to Sue McGrath's Science2Life show which was sponsored by Discover Science and Engineering.
The Royal Society of Chemistry Chemnet careers in chemistry event was the first of its kind in the Republic. Transition Year students who attended were able to see different chemistry careers and research showcased at a series of interactive stands.
The final event was the ISTA Senior Science Quiz, won by CBS Nenagh. LIT heat winners CBS Nenagh went on to win the National Senior Science Quiz final held last Saturday (November 24th) in Trinity College Dublin. Congratulations to the winning team.
