Society of Chartered Surveyors Predicts Shortage of Property Graduates
Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT) hosted a presentation by Mr John O’ Regan, Director with Davis Langdon at their Moylish campus recently. Davis Langdon, an AECOM company, are one of the leading construction consultants in Ireland. Mr O’ Regan’s presentation came on foot of the recent Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland (SCSI) report on Graduate Employment Trends in Construction and Property Surveying. The report has highlighted that “there is currently a shortage of suitably qualified property graduates to fill available roles in the property sector
The School of the Built Environment at LIT organised the visit having recognised the need to address the falling number of student entrants to the sector and the importance of current students developing links with potential future employers.
Speaking after the presentation Ms Maria Kyne, Head of School of the Built Environment said, “The SCSI, in this report, are drawing attention to the fact that there is already a shortage of graduates being felt in the property sector and this will shortly follow in construction surveying. The purpose of the talk here at LIT is to ensure that those currently reviewing their career options, together with their parents and career guidance professionals, give due consideration to surveying as a career.”.
Mr O’ Regan of Davis Langdon also noted the time lag from a student entering a surveying course to completing the honours degree four years later. Mr O’ Regan highlighted the benefit of LIT’s 1 year work placement programme to both the students and industry. Throughout the current economic slowdown LIT has continued to support existing courses and expand its range of property and engineering options available to potential students.
Davis Langdon have a longstanding relationship with LIT in providing work placement experience for 3rd year Quantity Surveyor students, employment for many graduates and professional review and input to a number of LIT’s courses in the property field.
