Mature Students

The Access Service aims to promote and facilitate entry to, and participation in, the academic programmes and student life of the Institute for mature students. LIT welcomes mature students and will accept applications from persons of mature years, (twenty-three years of age on 1st January prior to admission). Such applications, together with documentary proof of relevant work experience and/or qualifications, which they wish to have considered, should reach the CAO office on or before 1st February of the relevant year.

All undergraduate courses in LIT are open to mature applicants.  To secure a place, students without the normal academic entry requirements and who are of mature years must satisfy an Admissions Assessment Board that they have the basic ability and academic foundation to follow the course and take the examinations successfully.

LIT strongly encourages applications from mature candidates and is continually working towards wider participation of adult students.  For details on how to apply to LIT as a Mature Student click here.

Pre- entry and post entry activities offered specifically for mature students include:

  • Information Seminars - these are provided on and/or off-campus and are specifically tailored information sessions for interested groups with particular emphasis on funding for third-level education and courses offered.
  • Mature Student Orientation & Induction Programme -   The aim of this programme is to present the mature students with a taste of higher education and to assist the student in coping with the transition into third-level education while also contributing to student progression. The programme provides new mature students with a structured opportunity to alleviate many of their anxieties about returning to full-time education.
  • Mature Student Support Network - The Access Service facilitated bi-weekly Mature Student Support Network meetings throughout the academic year in both the Moylish and Clare Street Campus. The aim of the network is to provide support and advice to new and existing mature students as they take the exciting but challenging journey through third-level education. The Network invites mature students to an introductory meeting at the beginning of term. The Learning Support Unit kindly facilitated key monthly mature student focused workshops during the year including: - including English writing, basic computer skills, study skills sessions, exam techniques and time management.
  • Mature Student Support Workshops - a number of seminars on key skills are run throughout the academic year, delivered by the Learning Support Unit and the Teaching and Learning Centre. These seminars are open to all undergraduate mature students.
