How to Apply to LIT |

This section will guide you if you are applying for a place at Limerick Institute of Technology. Unless otherwise stated, all dates given in this section on applications refer to the year in which admission is sought.
First Year Undergraduates All first year undergraduate applications should be made to the Central Applications Office, Tower House, Eglinton Street, Galway (www.cao.ie). The CAO publish a joint Handbook and Application Form which may be obtained from their website. The Handbook will provide you with full details of the application procedure. Read it carefully and make sure that you follow the directions given. Neither the Institute nor CAO can be responsible for any mistakes you make if you don’t follow the correct procedures.
Key CAO Closing Dates:
- Application = 1st February
- Late application = 1st May
- Change of mind = 1st July
Entry Requirements Higher Certificate (Level 6)
You must have a Grade D3 or higher at Ordinary Level in five Leaving Certificate Subjects. Two of these subjects must include: Mathematics and a Language (Irish or English). In practice, entry levels are significantly above the minimum and points are calculated from the six best subjects from one sitting.
Degree (Level 7)
You must have a Grade D3 or higher at Ordinary Level in five subjects of the Leaving Certificate Examination. Two of these subjects must include: Mathematics and a Language (Irish or English). In practice, entry levels are significantly above the minimum and points are calculated from the six best subjects from one sitting, which for Level 7 programmes must be greater than 140 points.
Honours Degree (Level 8)
You must have a Grade C3 or higher in two Higher Level subjects, together with a Grade D3 or higher in four other Ordinary Level subjects in the Leaving Certificate Examination. Two of these subjects must include: Mathematics and a Language (Irish or English). In practice, entry levels are significantly above the minimum and points are calculated from the six best subjects from one sitting. 2nd, 3rd & 4th Year Undergraduate Applicants (Advanced Entry) Students can apply to LIT to transfer into 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of any Undergraduate course. The entry requirements for these courses are the same as First Year Undergraduates above, however the application procedure is different. Students can apply by Direct Entry.
Closing date for non- first year direct entry undergraduate programmes for 2013/14 is the 1st May 2013.

Add-On Courses Add-On courses are a continuation course from Higher Cert to Bachelors to Honours Bachelors. These courses are linked to certain undergraduate courses within the college.
You can apply for Add-On Courses directly to LIT. Click the button below for further information on the application procedure. Entry Requirements Add-on Degree (Level 7)
1. A Higher Certificate (Level 6) in a relevant field. 2. An equivalent qualification to a Higher Certificate (Level 6) with appropriate prerequisite subjects.
Add-on Honours Degree (Level 8)
1. A pass in a relevant Bachelor Degree (Level 7) in a relevant field with an overall average performance of at least 50%. 2. An equivalent qualification to a Bachelor Degree (Level 7) with appropriate prerequisite subjects. 3. A pass in a relevant Bachelor Degree (Level 7) with one-year suitable and relevant work experience. Postgraduate Courses There are several Taught and Research postgraduate courses on offer at LIT. Normally, an Honours Degree (Level 8) in a relevant discipline (minimum level of award 2.2) or a recognised equivalent is required. The Institute also welcomes applications from holders of appropriate undergraduate Degrees and relevant experience. Masters learners, after 12-18 months of successful study, will have the opportunity to transfer to a PhD (level 10). Apprentice Programmes. There are many Apprentice Programmes on offer in LIT. To apply for such programmes, applicants must do so through FÁS.
