About the School Of Business & Humanities
The Department of Business is dedicated to providing you with the relevant knowledge, skills and competencies to deal with the real world challenges you will face in the workplace of your chosen discipline.
We offer programmes leading to qualifications in Accounting & Finance and Marketing & Management at Higher Certificate, Degree and Honours Degree levels. We also offer a four-year Honours Degree in Law & Taxation to meet a demand for integrated tax consultancy and legal expertise in the business world. All of these programmes provide you with the foundation to pursue further study at a professional level, including examination exemptions with a number of professional bodies.
At the Department of Humanities we provide high quality and relevant education in Culinary Arts, Hospitality Studies, Tourism Management, Event Management, Hotel Front Office Management and Social Care disciplines. For CAO 2010, the Department introduced a four-year ab-initio Honours Degree programme in Business Studies with Sports Management. This programme will provide graduates with a thorough appreciation of the dynamic business principles necessary for the successful management of sports related clubs and enterprises.
All our programmes provide a blend of theory and practice through active learning
approaches where educators engage with learners in activities which stimulate their
interest and enhance their learning. Examples of this learner-centred approach
includes a combination of formal lectures, tutorials, group projects, presentations,
case studies, educational visits, problem based learning, work placements, simulation
activities, role plays, and visiting speakers from the professions and industry.
We are extremely proud of our students and their achievements, both academic and extracurricular. Some of our current students include male and female inter-county and provincial footballers, hurlers and camogie players; All-Ireland league and All-Ireland colleges rugby players; national league soccer players; dancing champions and, of course, Fitzgibbon Cup Hurling winners.
Many of our students have spent time working on a voluntary basis in local primary schools or with local charities. We also have a dedicated group of students who work with LIT’s Learning Support Unit to provide learning and tutorial support to other LIT students in the form of Peer Assisted Learning (PAL), whereby senior students tutor other students.
