Clonmel is the county town of South Tipperary. It is the largest town in the county, serving a population of about 18,000. The town lies mainly on the northern bank of the river Suir with a smaller section south of the river. For students that enjoy outdoor activities, Clonmel is ideally situated as it is surrounded by mountains. It lies in a valley, surrounded by mountains and hills. The Comeragh Mountains lie to the south, while northeast of the town is the famous Slievenamon, so within a short drive from Clonmel you’ll find acres of lush, green forests and mountain walks with plenty of treks for leisurely strolls or more strenuous hikes for those that enjoy a challenge.
Clonmel has always been a thriving business town. The inland waterway of the river Suir gave Clonmel its own quays that resulted in substantial trade and commerce in the past. Charles Bianconi was once Mayor of Clonmel and is responsible for initiating Ireland’s first overland public transport system. In recent times, Clonmel has become home to many large multi-national companies, particularly in the pharmaceutical area. You certainly won’t be short of things to do in Clonmel as the town boasts a plentiful supply of lively pubs, trendy cafés and a good nightclub scene to tempt students to an occasional night on the town!
