Frequently Asked Questions

Is it free?
Yes all full-time registered students of LIT can use our services

Is it Confidential?
We are a confidential professional service bound by professional codes of ethics and also the IAUCC (Irish Association of University and College Counsellors).

Your relationship with your counsellor is confidential, however if you are a risk to yourself or you inform us that somebody else may be at risk e.g. child protection, we may need to take further action, however your counsellor will include you in this decision making process.

Will my attendance in Student Counselling be on my academic record?

Who comes for Counselling?
All students have used the Student Counselling service, so whether you are new to college, a mature student, a post-grad, a student with a disability or from another culture you are welcome to attend.

What if it’s an emergency?
If you are in crisis please make contact with the service as soon as possible and we will endeavour to give you an emergency slot that day or as soon as possible.

I am worried about my friend what can I do?
Register for counselling and make an initial appointment to discuss your concerns with the Counsellor.

What if I have to cancel or reschedule an appointment?
If possible please give us as much notice as possible and at least 24hrs if you can so we can offer the appointment to another student who may be waiting.  Cancelling too late means it may not be possible to reallocate the time.

How long is a counselling session?
An assessment session is usually 30 minutes, regular sessions are 50 minutes.

How many counselling sessions can I have?
Usually up to a maximum of 6, however some students attend for more where required.

Do you have group counselling?
Yes we run stress management workshops and other groups as appropriate.
