What is the programme about?
Children require high-quality education and care during their formative years to reach their potential and this is the focus of the BA degree in Early Childhood Education & Care. This three-year programme is structured to enable participants to become professional, reflective practitioners with an integrated approach in early childhood education and care. Students will acquire skills in areas such as: children’s play and creativity; care; education; children’s literature; psychology, sociology and social policy. A supervised work placement in a variety of early years settings is a key element of the programme enabling students to learn from practice as well as theory.
Modules covering areas such as: education and play; child development and education; drama and movement, art and music, social environment; health; hygiene; nutrition; safety; communication; management and personal and professional development.
The design and content of the programme has been determined by the Model Framework for Education, Training and Professional Development for the Early Childhood Care and Education sector.
This programme is an innovative practice-led programme where students learn how to combine theory and practice and to develop as reflective practitioners. An active learning environment is achieved through lectures, seminars, workshops, enquiry-based learning with children’s learning materials.
Placement Modules
The programme includes a work placement that will bring students into direct contact with children.
To ensure the protection of the public and justify public trust and confidence, LIT uses the Garda Central Vetting Unit (GCVU) service to assess the suitability of applicants. Depending upon the outcome of the vetting process, the Institute reserves the following rights: 1. to not register a learner; 2. to remove an existing registered learner; 3. to delay the learner’s practice placement modules on course.

Language Acquisition, Creative Group Facilitation for Young Children, Legal Studies for Early Childhood Care & Education, Professional Practice & Child Protection, Equality & Diversity in Early Childhood, Research Methods for the Early Years Entry Requirement Leaving Certificate applicants will require a grade O6/H7 in five subjects, these subjects must include Maths and English or Irish.

Graduates Work For Graduates may find employment as early childhood educators and managers in a variety of award winning early childhood settings in the private and community sectors.
Graduates on similar programmes in this area have also gone on to level 8 studies which opens up access to postgraduate studies in Ireland, UK, Australia in areas including: speech and language therapy, equality studies, legal studies, child and family community studies, applied behaviour analysis, Montessori and adult and community education.
