Community Engagement Gateway

The Community Engagement Gateway is a flagship project of Limerick Institute of Technology’s (LIT) Campus 2030 delivering social transformation to the most disadvantaged community in Limerick and in Ireland.

The Community Engagement Gateway is a flagship project of Limerick Institute of Technology’s (LIT) Campus 2030 Masterplan, delivering social transformation to the most disadvantaged community in Limerick and in Ireland. The goal is to build capacity back into a severely distressed city neighbourhood— educational capacity, retail capacity, quality-of-life capacity, and especially economic capacity — guided by the belief that all these elements will unite to create one richly diverse connected and cohesive community. In the 1990’s LIT found itself surrounded by the poverty, crime, and physical decline that afflicted the north-side of Limerick City.

The LIT response like many other institutions was to turn inward, trying to insulate themselves. In physical terms this resulted in the erection of boundaries such as a concrete wall between LIT and its immediate neighbours – the communities of Moyross, Ballynanty, St. Nessans Community College, Corpus Christi Primary School, St. Munchins Girls National School and Thomond Park. However, this approach characterised by barriers and boundaries is being radically altered through a range of progressive engagement measures, driven by LIT’s particular focus on its civic engagement mission and strong partnerships with the community. The significant infrastructural step change now required will be delivered by this transformational project.

In the Community Engagement Gateway we will co-locate community, education and sports facilities to enable social transformation in a coherent and sustainable way. This facility leverages the proven success of the positive influence of sport as a progressive social catalyst, where LIT already has a track record.

The Community Engagement Gateway will physically open the LIT City North campus to the three surrounding communities of Moyross (Corpus Christi Parish); Ballynanty (St Munchins Parish); and Kileely /Thomondgate (St. Munchins Parish), integrating the campus with the neighbourhoods; it removes physical walls and psychological boundaries, enabling the three communities, LIT and Thomond Park to work as one.

The Community Engagement Gateway is a large multipurpose public building with flexible spaces, indoor astroturf and a civic plaza operating year round. The building will face the LIT campus as a sports and teaching facility and will face the neighbourhood as a community and sports amenity. The development will remove symbols of division e.g. a boundary wall and utilise the LIT Campus to connect the residential communities, Thomond Park and the City Centre. The physical master-plan will ensure that LIT is better integrated with the City North area and will create benefits and positive impacts in the areas of healthcare, employment, social integration, education, self-esteem and local community infrastructure. In effect it will create a transformational integration of hopes, aspirations and deliverable life-changing opportunities to a disenfranchised community. This community based project will be transformational for the Moyross and City North Community and play a significant role in the integration of that community with an education corridor encompassing 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th level education. It will deliver on real educational infrastructural needs for the LIT campus community as well as amenity needs of the north side of the city.
