Fergus Finlay to speak at Launch of Applied Social Sciences Department at LIT

The recently established Department of Applied Social Sciences which is housed in Moylish and Thurles campuses, is delighted to invite you to its official launch at LIT-Thurles on: Thursday, Jan 28th at 7p.m. The launch will feature, Mr. Fergus Finlay C.E.O of Barnardos as its guest speaker. Mr. Finlay, one of Ireland’s best known advocates of social justice, will speak on the theme of: “Working towards a more just society.”

The launch of this new department marks an exciting expansion for LIT and builds on the track record of Community Development work at the Thurles Campus and Social Care Practice at Moylish. The newly formed Department of Applied Social Sciences in LIT, now offers honours degree programmes in: Social Care Work at both its Thurles and Moylish Campuses and in Social and Community Studies at the Thurles campus. The Department also offers a Master’s Programme in Social Care Management and is currently developing a Master’s Programme in Management in the Community and Voluntary Sector.

Ms. Cathy Jones, Head of the newly formed department said:

I am very optimistic about the future growth of this Department, not only in terms of exciting new programme developments in the Social Sciences in the near future, but also in the growth of research and development work in collaboration with our community partners in the Applied Social Science field.’ She also stated that: ‘Department team members across both campuses, have significant expertise in: community development, social care, youth work, active learning, human development, positive behaviour support, management and supervision. Cathy and department staff will be unveiling the departmental vision for future academic and research development at the official launch in Thurles on January 28th”.

Dr. Michael Ryan, Programme Leader for the BA (Honours) in Social Care Work at the Thurles Campus said:

It is very encouraging for staff and students to see the growth and development in the Social Sciences in the Thurles region. We are delighted to have the support of so many partner organisations and agencies committed to the professional placement element of the programmes.

Lisa Scott, Programme Leader, BA (Honours) in Social Care Work, Limerick Campus said:

The launch of our own Department of Applied Social Sciences is very exciting for all of us. The opportunities for development both in teaching and learning and for the development of our suite of research initiatives, will be greatly enhanced as a result of the new department. Furthermore, the expansion of the BA in Social Care Work to the Thurles campus since last September, can only be of benefit to both students and communities in both Limerick and Tipperary.

The Department staff and students are now looking forward to the launch event and to hearing Fergus Finlay speak on the very relevant theme of: Working Towards A more Just Society. We look forward to seeing you there.
