Irish Contemporary Ceramics Collection

Acquisitions Day 2016: 27th October 2016

This year sees three new additions to the Irish Contemporary Ceramics Collection (ICCC). Work by Ingrid Murphy, Katharine West and Cormac Boydell will join this all-island collection. Boydell, based in Allihies, is known for his original and experimental handling of clay. He describes his use of imagery as born out of the rugged coastal environment in which he lives and the history and myth of this land. Murphy, originally from Cork, has lived and worked in Wales since 1990 and her work carries a sense of irony rarely seen among Irish-based artists. West is a sculptor based in Galway. Her work, both subtle and sensitive, responds to landscape and the human body in non-obvious ways.

The artists were selected by a panel of representatives from the Hunt Museum, the Ceramics programme, Limerick School of Art and Design, Design and Crafts Council of Ireland and Ceramics Ireland. Now in its second year, it is envisioned that this joint project between Limerick School of Art and Design (LIT) and the Hunt Museum, Limerick, where the collection is housed, will grow annually to reflect the richness, diversity and creativity of contemporary Irish ceramic practice.

The possibility of establishing the collection was initially proposed when Irelands first National City of Culture was held in Limerick in 2014. During that year the Hunt Museum hosted ‘Culture of Clay’, an exhibition celebrating 40 years of the Ceramics programme at Limerick School of Art and Design (LIT). Following the success of this exhibition and working on the existing links between LSAD and the Hunt Museum, the Irish Contemporary Ceramics Collection was established.

All three artists, alongside Claire Curneen who contributed to the collection in 2015, will participate in the 2016 acquisitions day and lecture series on Thursday 27th October 2016.

The lectures will take place in the Church Gallery, Limerick School of Art and Design, Clare St, Limerick from 10am – 3.30pm, followed by a reception at the Hunt Museum from 4pm – 6pm where the new additions to the collection can be viewed. The inaugural six pieces of work are on permanent display in the Hunt Museum.
