LIT Reaction to European Capital of Culture 2020 Announcement

Terry Twomey, interim President of LIT has said that the institute is hugely proud of its ‘Head of School’, Limerick bid director Mike Fitzpatrick, for Limerick’s European Capital of Culture 2020 bid.

“Limerick may not have won today, but no effort was spared in the bid, which made a huge statement. This is a city and county very much on the rise and with a proud and celebrated identity. The bid’s theme of ‘Belonging’ resonated strongly within Limerick and in a range of communities.
“The 2020 bid took up where the 2014 National Capital of Culture programme left off and has added great momentum to Limerick’s wider transformation.
“Mike Fitzpatrick, one of our own, has been absolutely central in all of this. When we ‘loaned’ Mike out to take over as director of the National City of Culture programme in early 2014, we knew that he would bring great energy, talent and leadership to the role. It is now apparent that he has done all that, and more. We are proud of him and everything he has done.
“Mike has been a great leader in the cultural community in Limerick but has also been part of an incredible team. Indeed, this has been a collective effort on behalf of all of Limerick.
“It has been a real show of unity and celebration of diversity on the part of the city. It has laid down a marker and created new levels of pride and ambition for what we want to see of our city.
“One of the great legacies of Limerick 2020 will be the collective spirit fostered by Mike, Sheila Deegan and the Limerick 2020 team. The implications of this will be seen in both the shorter and the longer term.
“In the meantime, we will work with the Limerick Local Authorities and all other stakeholders to nurture the legacy of Limerick 2020 into the future.”
