Pharmaceutical & Forensics students National Analytical Skills Champions

We are delighted to inform you that Jamie McNamara and Marcin Raszka from Pharmaceutical and Forensics Analysis year 2 were the overall winners of the final of the Eurachem Analytical Skills competition, which was a fantastic achievement for them and for Applied Science at LIT.

Two teams from the Dept. of Applied Science took part in the national final of the Eurachem competition in Athlone IT last Friday;

Pharmaceutical and Forensic Analysis:
Jamie McNamara and Marcin Raszka
Applied Biology: Bianca Arino and Ahmed Hassan

Both teams performed extremely well on the day which involved a tough morning and afternoon lab sessions consisting of a titration and a UV-Vis spec determination of a test material. Twelve third level institutes from around the country took part including UCD, DCU, DIT, WIT, IT Tralee, GMIT, Sligo IT and IT Tallaght among others.

We are delighted to inform you that Jamie and Marcin were the overall winners on the day which was a fantastic achievement for them and for Applied Science at LIT. The team mentors were Elaine Raggett and Josephine Treacy.

Eurachem is an association of Professional European Analysts with close links to bodies charged with promoting excellence and reliability in analytical measurement worldwide. The national final is promoted by Eurachem Ireland, Institutes of Technology and Universities. The competition is designed to raise awareness among science students of the importance of accuracy and reliability in analytical measurement, and to raise levels of skills in analytical chemistry techniques. The competition is supported by agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency, industries such as Mason Technology and by professional bodies such as the Institute of Chemistry of Ireland and the Royal Society of Chemistry. ​
