Science and Stone Circles: A Limerick Festival of Science Event

Lough Gur
Saturday 25th November
10 a.m. - 12 noon

Stone circles are architecturally simple structures with hundreds of examples scattered across the landscapes of Ireland, Britain and NW Europe. They were constructed in the Neolithic and Bronze Age and exhibit considerable variation in the size and number of their structural stones.

Who were the people who erected them? Were they used for burial and remembering the ancestors? Were they places for ceremonial gathering? Did skywatching and the cyclical movements of the Sun, Moon or prominent stars feature as an important element in their use and meaning?

With a focus on Grange ‘B’ stone circle at Lough Gur, Co. Limerick (Ireland’s largest stone circle), this illustrated talk will explore these questions using findings from archaeology and archaeoastronomy. A computer planetarium will also be used to explain the changing skyscape through the year.

Mokulito is the process of lithography on wood. Unlike traditional stone lithography, mokulito is an acid free process and is much more accessible. This process can also be used in conjunction with woodcut and laser cutting and can be printed on intaglio presses. This will be a fun, explorative workshop and participants will get to print their own mokulito. All materials are provided free. All levels welcome. Adults only.

The workshops will take place on Friday 24th November and there are 10 places available in each session. The first session is 11.00-12.30 and the second is 13.30-15.00. Workshop will take place in the LSAD print room.
