The First Degree: Degree-Level Education Available in Ennis For the First Time as LIT Launches New Social Care Programme

- Applications now open for programme starting in Ennis in September.

The interim president of LIT, Terry Twomey, has confirmed that the institute will be offering a degree programme in Social Care Work in Ennis from September. This marks the first time that people will be able to study to degree level in the town.

Mr Twomey stated that,

“We are very pleased to be able to offer this programme in Ennis. This is the professional qualification required to become a social care worker, in addition to being a strong academic degree in its own right.

“It is a tried and tested programme that LIT has been offering in Limerick and Tipperary. The programme will take three years to complete and students will be based in Ennis for the duration.

“It starts in September, and people can apply directly through LIT. Next year, the programme will also be on the CAO, meaning that people from around the country will be able to apply to study a degree in Ennis for the first time.

“Having Higher Education available in Ennis means that it will be easier to access this kind of qualification for people who might otherwise find it difficult to study in Limerick or Galway. The fact that there will be a body of students located in Ennis should be beneficial to the town itself.

“LIT’s offering this degree in Ennis reflects the importance of Clare in the institute. Over 1,000 Clare people are already working or studying in LIT. We want to reflect this unique relationship more fully by expanding our presence in the county.

“I’m very hopeful that this degree programme will be successful in Ennis and will grow LIT’s presence in Ennis.”

Mr. Terry Twomey, Acting President, Limerick Institute of Technology
