Summer Music on the Shannon in the Millennium Theatre

For three weeks each year Summer Music on the Shannon and LIT’s Millennium Theatre pool their expertise and resources in order to create what must surely be one of the zaniest madcap musical programmes ever devised for children anywhere in these Isles. And surprise, surprise it really does seem to work as the infectious enthusiasm and sheer joy of all the children involved testifies.

The Summer Music on the Shannon programme is unique in both its aims and achievements. It combines children and teenagers from disadvantaged areas of Limerick and Clare with a similar number of their Pan-European peers, and in just three weeks has them performing in the company of twenty professional musicians from eight different countries in a range of classical concerts throughout the Limerick and Clare region. Even more extraordinary is that another group of these children under the guidance of professional singers and musicians from all over the world performed a bespoke Opera The Adventures of Jonah in LITs Millennium Theatre this August.

Limerick’s beautiful LIT Millennium Theatre, the new cultural ‘home base’ for Summer Music on the Shannon, was the location for three additional evening concerts which began on Tuesday August 2nd with a gala performance featuring SMS Stars of Today and Tomorrow and was attended by the Canadian Ambassador to Ireland Kevin Vickers. This was then followed by the SMS Youth Opera Theatre performance of The Adventures of Jonah and ending with a grand festival finale on Monday, August 8th.

The Millennium Theatre is also currently hosting the 2016 Fusion Dance Festival which sees a number of professional dancers parting their wisdom and skills onto children of 11 years and over. The weeklong festival will then conclude with a major performance in the Millennium Theatre on Saturday 13th August at 8pm. Tickets for this event and all other events in the Millennium Theatre may be purchased online at www.litmt.ie or at the door prior to each performance.
