More than 40,000 visitors, including 1,000 international visitors, are expected to attend to watch the best barbecue chefs in the world compete for the title of WBQA World BBQ Champion 2017 and prizes adding up to €15,000.

Those attending the event will not only witness the variety, drama, fun and skill involved in transforming a passion for flame and slow cooking into a sport, they will also get to taste the food served up by the competitors.

Limerick-native and President of the WBQA Patrick O’Sullivan pointed out that food being served on the day is not your average sunny afternoon, backyard, barbecue.

“It’s not about sausages and burgers. This is the Cordon Bleu of Barbecue,” he said. “It’s going to be an unforgettable event that you’re not going to want to miss.”

Food preparation for the event will be facilitated in the kitchens of LIT, while the culinary, hospitality and event management students from the Limerick third level institution will also be supporting the chefs and organisers later in the People’s Park.

As many as 150 international judges, including judges from LIT staff, will judge the five mandatory categories: chicken, beef brisket, pork shoulder, pork ribs, and fish. There will also be three optional categories: vegetarian, dessert, and chefs choice, which requires teams to cook a speciality BBQ dish from their homeland.

Ambassador for the event Young Munster Chef and renowned Pitmaster, John Relihan, will also demonstrate his BBQ skills and provide some helpful advice and tips throughout the weekend. John John was Head Chef at Jamie Oliver’s Barbecoa BBQ restaurant in London and trained with renowned Pitmaster Adam Perry Lang. He now owns his own BBQ restaurant in Cork, Holy Smoke.
