In addition, LIT’s Thurles campus will host a very interesting show for Junior Cycle and Senior Cycle second-level school students called 'Across Africa'.

We go back in time with Catherine McGuiness to follow in the footsteps of the first person from Ireland to cross Africa – Dr Thomas Heazle Parke, doctor to the infamous Henry Morton Stanley’s African expedition. This was a time before digital photographs, mobile phones, television, before YouTube, before David Attenborough. All that was known about the huge continent of Africa and its wildlife was through the eyes of explorers like Thomas. Part storytelling, part demonstrations, Across Africa evokes a time long gone, when adventurers were the rock stars of the time.

The show will take place in the Conference Centre at LIT Thurles campus on Friday 11th November 2016, with shows running at 10am, 11.30am and 1pm. Each show will last an hour. Admission is free, but pre-booking is necessary. To book in a school group, contact Paula Briody at 0504 28253 or email paula.briody@lit.ie. The show is provided by Science Foundation Ireland, as part of Science Week, which will see hundreds of events taking place nationwide.
