 Sports @ LIT

Clubs and societies are at the heart of LIT life and all students are encouraged to get involved in the varied sporting activities on offer across our campuses. Joining a club or society is a fantastic way to make new friends and meet people with similar interests. For first years in particular, getting involved with a club can really help to make that transition from school to college easier, and involvement in a club or society also helps you to develop other valuable skills alongside your academic skills. Your time in college will introduce you to many new adventures and activities that you may not have tried previously and while we encourage you to get involved in campus life, it’s also important to maintain a healthy balance between commitments to lectures and study and sports and social activities!

At LIT, we boast a vibrant clubs scene, ensuring that many sporting interests are catered for. Our sports clubs cater for all levels of activity and you can get involved at your own pace, whether you are an elite athlete, a beginner or just looking to get fit and have some fun! Clubs and activities include GAA – Hurling, Camogie, Men’s & Ladies Gaelic Football, Men’s and Ladies Rugby, Soccer, Boxing, Judo, Weightlifting, Basketball and the ever popular Outdoor Club….to name but a few, as well as activities such as Aerobics and Circuit Training. ‘Freshers Week’ which takes place at place at the beginning of each academic year is the main recruitment time for clubs and societies, when you can find out more about the various activities available and sign up. New clubs are always encouraged.

We participate in many inter-varsity competitions and many students have had the opportunity to represent the Institute and proudly wear the LIT colours over the years. Our sports clubs are mentored and supported by successful and experienced coaches – Davy Fitzgerald, Cyril Farrell and Paul Browne currently work with our hurling teams, while former Irish international rugby player Joy Neville is our Rugby Development Officer. We have tasted much success in many sports and in recent times, LIT has won national competitions in hurling, camogie, Gaelic football, boxing, weightlifting and judo.
