About Thurles
Thurles is a vibrant and prosperous town, located in North Tipperary. Serving a population of about 10,000 Thurles is a thriving commercial and educational centre and a great place to live and study. Located on the river Suir, the Cathedral town boasts many cultural and recreational facilities; the Source Arts Centre and Theatre, Thurles Leisure Centre, a multiscreen cinema and Semple Stadium, the spiritual home of hurling. In Liberty Square, at the heart of Thurles is Hayes Hotel, the birthplace of the GAA in 1884. To this day Hayes remains a popular meeting point for the thousands of GAA fans that descend on Thurles each summer to cheer on their respective counties. Indeed the one thing many GAA fans across the province do actually agree on is that there is nowhere to rival Thurles on Munster hurling final day!
The LIT Thurles campus is located on the Nenagh road, close to Semple Stadium. The campus incorporates a 200 seater conference centre, lecture theatres, computer suites, science laboratories and specialist Games Development labs. The Thurles Chamber Enterprise Centre is also located on the campus and the Shannon Development Technology Park is adjacent, creating an integrated ecosystem to support new enterprise development. State of the art gym facilities have been developed to support the growing Sports Strength and Conditioning programme.
