LIT Tipperary launches new scheme to recycle waste and help students

‘Green Week’ was recently celebrated at LIT’s Thurles campus and coincided with the installation of a new waste management system in the college canteen.

Designed in consultation with the canteen manager, the new waste management unit will allow LIT Tipperary’s canteen customers to separate out materials that can be recycled and which will save the Institute money by reducing its annual waste disposal bill.  It will also help the college to meet a legal requirement to separate canteen food waste and will mean that 80% of the waste currently sent to landfill can be recycled or composted instead. The new system will also assist LIT Tipperary in its efforts to get a Green Flag under the An Taisce Green-Campus programme.

To encourage canteen users to adopt the new system, a portion of the financial savings made will be donated to the college’s Student Hardship Fund, thus benefiting students as well as the environment. The area was expertly built by JJ O'Sullivan Construction, Littleton, while the colourful and informative signage was provided by students on the Honours Science degree in Environmental and Natural Resource Management.
