2nd year Creative Multimedia students from LIT Tipperary, Berit Alits (www.beritalits.com) and Brian Dowling were shortlisted from 129 entries and 19 European countries to participate in Languages through Lenses project. Only 15 scripts were shortlisted based on the following criteria:
- Artistic vision
- Relation to the theme
- Communication of the theme
- Feasibility
“A few weeks ago our lecturer, Paul Gardiner came into class with the news that a Europe wide film/animation competition was announced (http://www.elia-artschools.org/Activities/languages-through-lenses-2012). We had just 6 days to get our submission in comprising of story, script, storyboard, budget, CV’s and cover letters for the concept of promoting languages.
We knew this was going to be a lot of work to do in such short time but our lecturers Paul Gardiner and Michael Kiely inspired us to get the work done. The video/animation brief was to create a 90 second advert and one of the stipulations was that we can use different languages in this piece but no subtitles are allowed. All of the students were very excited with the opportunity to be in a competition of this level and really put in a lot of effort, and we all knew it would take an original idea to make it to the top 15” explained Berit and Brian.
“Our idea is about a child who lives in multilingual family and how well she is able to adapt within it, unlike her parents who don’t speak each other’s native languages the child happily exists with a multi-lingual setting and is used a conduit for both. We have to make a 90 second advert which promotes languages and we will be combining both video and animation elements in our project.”
All 15 selected entries are invited to attend workshops in Amsterdam in April and the workshops, meetings and other events at the PRIX EUROPA Festival in Berlin in October. A €5000 production grant and a dvd of the video production will be produced and widely distributed to television stations and festivals.
