New Sports Degree for LIT Tipperary

LIT Tipperary is pleased to announce a new full-time Sports Degree programme at the Institute’s Thurles campus for September 2011. Developed in partnership with Setanta College, this innovative new degree is built around two pillars: Coaching and Conditioning and Business and Technology. This combination of disciplines gives the programme a unique position among the sports programmes currently offered in Higher Education in Ireland and will give graduates a mixture of the technical, social and management skills required to pursue careers as top class coaches and administrators.

Commenting on the new programme, Mr. Joe Gorey, CEO of Setanta College said “It is with great enthusiasm and pride that Setanta College enters this partnership with Tipperary Institute (LIT Tipperary) in delivering this exciting new programme of study. I believe that upon completion, the student will have a competitive edge entering the workplace, as the combination of Strength and Conditioning, Business and IT will set a new benchmark for the sports graduate. With all the major sports organisations recognising the important role of the Strength and Conditioning coach, I believe these graduates will have an exciting and crucial part to play in the future successes in Irish sport.”

Mr. Gorey’s comments were endorsed by Mr. Michael O’Connell, Acting CEO, LIT Tipperary who said “This new programme in Sports Strength and Conditioning is a significant development in a county and region very proud of its sporting history. The innovative partnership with Setanta College will bring further diversity and added value to the expanding suite of programmes now on offer at LIT Tipperary Institute.

Practical sports coaching combining strength and conditioning competencies are growing areas of interest both globally and in Ireland. Previously, the individual that looked after the fitness element of a sport was called the Trainer or Fitness Coach. More recently, the universally acknowledged term for the Trainer or Fitness Coach is the ‘Strength and Conditioning’ Coach.

Setanta College currently provides a range of nationally and internationally recognised practical coaching courses, as well as diploma courses for active and future coaches in club team conditioning. Both Setanta College and LIT Tipperary have reputations as high quality educators and they will bring together highly qualified lecturers to deliver the new programme, which will commence in September.
