Programmable Logic Controller Systems (PLCS)

Degree in Electrical Technology - Evening Mode

Aims

To provide the learner with a broad knowledge of automation systems, programming approaches and industrial control applications.


Having successfully completed this module, the learner will be able to:


1. Outline the benefits of programmable control.
2. Explain the scan cycle operation of a programmable logic controller.
3. Devise structured programmes for manufacturing control applications using appropriate computer software.
4. Use a PLC to control discrete electro-mechanical and pneumatic devices.
5. Select an appropriate control action for a simple process model.

Entry
Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements to take this module, however these are not introductory level modules and some familiarity with the area as well as a level of independent study would be expected for exam success.

Content
PLC Control, PLC Programming, Software Programming, PLC Applications, Control Systems, This module will include hands-on programming using Ladder Logic (LAD) and Sequential Function Charts (SFC) in FX-GPWIN software for the Mitsubishi FX PLC.
Examinations

Each taught module has a programme of continuous assessment worth 50% and a final exam worth 50%. It is necessary to pass both elements to achieve an award in the module. Students not registered on the Degree receive an LIT Subject Certificate on successful completion of the module. Students registered for the Degree will receive ECTS credits for each group of modules successfully completed. Accumulation of 60 credits will lead to the Degree Award.

Duration 

12 weeks, 1 night per week, from 7:00pm – 10:00pm
Every Tuesday (Semester 1) and Thursday (semester 2)
Starting Tuesday 5th October 2010 and Thursday 3rd February 2011
