Energy Efficiency in Industry

Degree in Electrical Technology - Evening Mode

Aims

To provide the learner with specialist knowledge of and analysis methods for energy usage in industry with a focus on energy efficiency and carbon emission reduction. Having successfully completed this subject the learner will be able to:


1. Prepare an energy audit of a facility and identify the key energy usage.
2. Propose the appropriate energy measurements for an enterprise and select the appropriate data-logging and monitoring equipment.
3. Analyse the energy usage of a facility or plant and present appropriate energy indexes and reports.
4. Identify opportunities for energy performance improvements across electrical, HVAC and process applications in industry.
5. Propose potential energy efficiencies that will have significant cost benefits and carbon emission reductions.

Entry
Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements to take this module, however these are not introductory level modules and some familiarity with the area as well as a level of independent study would be expected for exam success.

Content

Energy units, Definitions; TOE, BTU, Therms, KWHr, conversion among units, Energy profiles, national, domestic, industrial. I.S. 393 Energy Management Systems, ISO 14000 Environmental Management Standards, Energy Usage in Industry, Energy Audits, Electrical Efficiency, Efficient HVAC and Efficiency in Process Applications Process water, efficient treatment processes, set-points, Reduction and re-use of heat wastage, Compressed air systems, pressure settings, losses, efficient designs, case studies.

Examinations

Each taught module has a programme of continuous assessment worth 50% and a final exam worth 50%. It is necessary to pass both elements to achieve an award in the module.


Students not registered on the Degree receive an LIT Subject Certificate on successful completion of the module. Students registered for the Degree will receive ECTS credits for each group of modules successfully completed.
Accumulation of 60 credits will lead to the Degree Award.

12 weeks, 1 night per week, from 7:00pm – 10:00pm
Every Tuesday, starting Tuesday 1st February 2011
