Course Overview

This programme is a mix of technological, business and management skills specifically related to the automotive/transport industry. Students will be exposed to concepts and ideas that will allow them to develop the necessary competencies to launch a career in the transport industry.

Transportation technology has been identified by government as a key issue in maintaining and enhancing the competitiveness of our economy in the decades ahead. This programme allows students to gain the necessary skills to become managers in today’s automotive industry.

What are the entry requirements?

Leaving Certificate

A minimum of 5 O6/H7 grades in Leaving Certificate subjects, including Mathematics and English or Irish.

Mature applicants

Candidates applying as mature applicants may be required to attend an interview and may be requested to take an aptitude test to prove their suitability for a place on this programme.

Level 6 Craft Certificate (Trade), or National/Higher Certificate

Candidates who hold a Senior Trade Certificate and/or National Craft Certificate or holders of a National/Higher Certificate (Level 6) in Engineering or Technology may be considered for admission to Years 2 or 3 of this programme subject to a satisfactory interview.

International Applicants

International applicants should apply directly to the International Office at TUS, allowing plenty of time for completing the visa process. Applications for September start should be made by 1st June at the latest to ensure visas are processed in time.   • Mechanical Engineering Science

    Credits: 10

    To develop an understanding of the basic laws of physics and their application to engineering.

  • Automobile Electrics & Electronics I

    Credits: 10

    Introduce the learner to the fundamentals of electricity and automotive electrical and electronic systems.

  • Automobile Engineering and Vehicle Technology 1

    Credits: 15

    Introduce the learner to the basics of motor vehicle systems and the principles involved in their operation.

  • Computer Aided Design (Automobile Engineering)

    Credits: 5

    Engineering Drawing is an essential communication technique for those involved in Engineering, the aim of this module is to give the student a comprehensive introduction to the standards used in the preparation of Engineering drawings. Computer Aided Design (CAD) systems are now the typical means by which Engineering drawings are produced, students will use 2D and 3D CAD software to prepare a portfolio of their work.

  • Engineering Computing

    Credits: 5

    This module introduces the learner to the Microsoft Office suite of applications, including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, and demonstrates their use in everyday engineering. Beginning with the assumption that learners have no prior experience with computing, basic computing literacy is established before progressing to more advanced material. The learner will acquire general computing skills and competencies, in addition to a comprehensive understanding of Microsoft Office. The learner will develop the ability to apply the software to useful engineering applications such as formal report writing, generating engineering data, producing equations, data analysis, and data presentation.

  • Introduction to Mechanical Engineering Maths

    Credits: 10

    Develop a recognition of the basics of engineering mathematics and use them to solve practical engineering problems.

  • Motor Vehicle Retail Management 1

    Credits: 5

    This module is designed to provide an introduction to the theoretical and practical aspects of managing in a motor vehicle retailer. The module material covers, for example, Managing People, Business Communication, Marketing, Accounting and Finance and this material is related back to the franchised dealership. Assessment will include a group presentation.

  • Automobile Electrics & Electronics II

    Credits: 15

    Develop the learner’s knowledge of automotive electrical and electronic components and systems.

  • Automobile Engineering and Vehicle Technology 2

    Credits: 10

    Advance the learners knowledge of motor vehicle systems, construction and design.

  • Automotive Engineering Mathematics

    Credits: 10

    This module covers mathematical topics relevant to automobile technicians and road transport technology learners. It follows on from the basic principles that they have covered in Introduction to Mechanical Engineering Maths (Yr 1). Topics covered include areas, volumes, irregular shapes, trigonometry, waveform sketching, differentiation and graphical analysis. Practical problems in relation to automotive engineering are given throughout the module.

  • Computing, Automotive

    Credits: 5

    The aim of this module is have students demonstrate an understanding of some practical applications of computers in the Automotive, Transport and Agricultural Industries.

  • Motor Vehicle Retail Management 2

    Credits: 10

    MVRM2 emphasises the management/business/administrative aspect of the Service Manager’s job. The module covers service department work-related areas such as Workshop Loading and Control, Workshop Efficiency and Productivity, Workshop Layout, Warranty Administration, Customer Service Process, etc. The module also covers the work of the Dealer Principal, the Parts Sales and Vehicle Sales departments. There is also coverage of legal issues of particular relevance to the retail motor dealer.

  • Vehicle Science

    Credits: 10

    To expand the learners knowledge of engineering statics, dynamics, forces, hydraulics and materials testing allowing him/her to apply this knowledge to motor vehicle problems.

  • Automotive Retail & Transport Marketing

    Credits: 5

    To educate the learner on how vital marketing and entrepreneurialism is to the transport and motor retail industry and help them to formulate a business development and marketing strategy for the various segments of that industry. Procurement and E-Tendering incorporated into this module to reflect the ever-changing nature of winning contracts along with the Regulatory Compliance, Ethics and Legal Requirements associated with these contracts

  • Heavy Vehicle Engineering 1 – Powertrain & Chassis Systems

    Credits: 5

    Advance the learner’s knowledge of motor vehicle systems to include commercial heavy vehicles. This module builds on the topics covered in the Heavy Vehicle Engineering by providing a more in-depth look at the technologies especially in the areas of design and operation of chassis systems Along with a high emphasis on Sustainable Practice, European environmental regulations Electric, Hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles, E D I, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in the Automotive and Transport Industry.

  • Logistics Management

    Credits: 5

    This module is designed for students who want to learn how management can gain a competitive advantage through logistic know‑how.

    To build up the learner’s knowledge of Logistics and to demonstrate the importance and relevance of Logistics Management.

  • Management Science for Transport Management

    Credits: 5

    Module introduces learners to the use of Microsoft Excel to solve mathematical problems encountered in the Automotive Engineering & road transportation/logistical sectors.

  • Road Transport & Fleet Operations CPC 1 & 2

    Credits: 10

    Enhance the learner’s existing knowledge of the most important aspects of transport and fleet operations management. To prepare the student for take Paper one of the Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) exam set by The Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport. The learner will be examining the Industrial Relations and Social Legislation of Relevance to Road Transport Operation in Ireland.

  • Transport Safety Management

    Credits: 5

    The aim of this module is to address the need to provide professionals in the transport industry with safety awareness training when dealing with Drivers, Vehicles, Warehousing, Vehicle repair facilities. Along with a high emphasis on Sustainable Practice, European environmental regulations, E D I, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in the Automotive and Transport Industry.

  • Work Placement (Full Semester)

    Credits: 25

    On completion of the work placement period the student will have experienced and developed their understanding of working in a professional automotive/transportation environment. Along with a high emphasis on Sustainable Practice, European environmental regulations, E D I, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in the Automotive and Transport Industry
