Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Design in Product Design (Ceramics) (Level 8)

 

Programme Description

Ceramics is the production of objects in fired clay and includes a wide spectrum of products from bricks and tiles to wash hand basins, sanitary ware, domestic pottery, decorative ceramics, architectural ceramics and sculptural ceramics.


When students enter the course in Year 2, they are introduced to the three distinct pathways:


A Fine Art/ Sculptural pathway if you wish to produce gallery oriented work, the “one-off ” or specific client commissioned work.

 

A Product Design pathway if you wish to focus on developing ceramic products for the consumer market and see yourself as designers / makers.

 

Wheel based / Throwing Pathway if you wish to produce functional and decorative domestic ware or produce “once off ” pieces.

 

Modules
Year 1

Common Art & Design Year One
Entry into Ceramics is by competition and selection during this year.

 

Year 2

Ceramic Processes, Drawing, Ceramic Theory, Professional Practice, Critical and Contextual Studies.

 

Year 3

Ceramic Processes, Drawing, Ceramic Theory, Professional Practice, Critical and Contextual Studies. During Year 3 learners have the opportunity to take part in learner exchanges with colleges in Europe.

 

Year 4

Ceramic Practice, Drawing, Professional Practice, Critical and Contextual Studies, Work Placement. A body of work is also produced for the final examination together with a research report.

 

Duration

4 Years (including Art and Design Year One). Also available part-time over a longer period (ACCS).

24 hours per week plus 6 hours Critical and Contextual Studies
