This programme will prepare you for a career in Art & Design Teaching. Emphasis is placed on the concept of teaching as a creative activity, demanding capacities for problem solving, inventiveness, imagination and sensitivity.
The programme includes three blocks of teaching experience. Successful graduates, subject to the regulations of the Department of Education & Science, will qualify for permanent whole-time appointments as teachers of art in second-level schools.
The minimum entry requirement for this programme is an
Honours Degree in Art & Design (Level 8) or an equivalent qualification.
Teaching Practice, Lesson Planning, Evaluation of Educational Experiences.
This stage includes three blocks of teaching practice in schools:
Block 1 – October (4 weeks)
Block 2 – January (4 weeks)
Block 3 – April/May (6 weeks)
The main foundation subjects of education are studied with the objective
of relating theoretical ideas to real-world school situations; including:
psychological, sociological, philosophical, methodological and the
historical contexts of art & design education.
1 Year Post (Honours) Degree in Art & Design (Level 8).
30 per week
Holders of a recognised (Honours) Degree in Art & Design (Level 8) or an equivalent qualification.
