Keeper - The Maze/Long Kesh Project for the Triskel Gallery - Cork 2005 European City of Culture

return main page

Keeper in Triskel featured the film 'Billy's Museum' and premiered the video installation 'The Portraits', plus the audio installation 'Strikers, Narrative #1'.

The Portraits - Silent DVD video Installation. 2005. Shown in main space (6x17meters, 85sq.m). Using two unicol stands with Sony 29" PVM video monitors.

The aim of this piece is to create a portrait which is based on the more traditional painted representation. The portraits seem still, silent, but they are moving. They are watching, perhaps the audience - they are infact watching 'Billy's Museum for the first time and often register surprise and amusement. There is power in their silence. It is unusual to find politicians - who usually talk at us from the television - being silently represented on this familiar format.

· Amazing collection of a collection really good to see whats what, down in these parts - Well done to who ever brought this to Cork "Up the Real Rebels" - P. Byrne
· Billy Hull must be a really interesting man - D. Durham
· You expect to go to a gallery and see, you don't expect to hear! Thought it was amazing.
· Such a powerful piece of work - a real reminder of how art and its practice functions as a powerful tool in the narrative of difficult subject matter. Well Done!
· Gorgeous to be sitting on such soft seats in a dark room that is neither frightening or threatening: but comfortable…?
· Visited from Germany, very impressing documentation - few of this is known about among Germany /European people. This was worth documenting! - S. Moller
· Sorry but think you have mistaken social history for art making
· Very insightful - so often we in the Republic are so ignorant of the events and people - we don't understand the situation. Narrative adds to the overall theme without compromising its impact.
