LNSS Stakeholders Workshop October 6th 2008

On the 6th of October, LIT hosted the LNSS Stakeholders Workshop in the Board Room. Librarians and library staff from LIT, UL, IT Tralee and Mary Immaculate College attended.

The purpose of the workshop was to introduce the two main concerns of the LNSS project – Information Literacy and Staff Development – and to gather the stakeholders’ suggestions. Collaboration is a key part of the LNSS project.

The workshop began by examining Information Literacy, with a brief introduction by Padraig Kirby (LIT). The stakeholders were arranged in groups according to their institution. Group work followed to identify each institution’s current Information Literacy ethos, and improvements they would hope to see as a result of the LNSS project. Based on this, a number of Information Literacy models were presented by Padraig Kirby, Michelle Breen (UL) and Aoife Geraghty (UL) including PILOT, FIRST, EPIGEUM, CRANFIELD, OASIS, INFOSKILLS, TEXAS and QUEENSLAND UNIVERSITY. In the next group work session, the aforementioned IL models were evaluated according to set criteria. Epigeum and Cranfield were judged to be the highest scoring IL models.

The second session focussed on the Regional Staff Development Network and was introduced by Lindsay Mitchell (UL). Again, the stakeholders were arranged in groups according to their institution, and their goal was to identify their Top 10 priorities in terms of training. From that, each group selected 2-3 training topics vital to their institution. These were high priority topics that they hoped to start training on immediately. It was agreed that training venues should alternate between the partner institutions, and contact points were nominated.

All in all, the Stakeholders Workshop was deemed to be a success, with each institution contributing positively towards the group work sessions. It was vital in determining the direction the LNSS project would take, and much progress has been made as a result.
