Breaking The Rule Of Silence; Bearing Witness to the Magdalene Laundry
Evelyn Glynn
Evelyn Glynn.jpgBreaking the Rule of Silence, an exhibition on the Good Shepherd Magdalene laundry and its inhabitants, takes place in Limerick School of Art and Design from October 20th to 28th.
Breaking the Rule of Silence features a selection of drawings, sound and video installations, photography and an archival website that brings together 3 years of research and oral histories and gives a unique insight into the Magdalene laundry and the lives of the women incarcerated there. The building that housed the laundry is now home to Limerick School of Art and Design where Evelyn Glynn, the artist, has studied for the last six years. The oral histories collected during this time offer a range of perspectives and experiences including: women who were incarcerated in the institution; workers employed by the Good Shepherds; relatives of women incarcerated, users of the laundry service and people who had opportunity to visit the institution.
The exhibition and a website will be introduced by Dr. Kieran Cashell and Breda Lynch of LSAD and launched by local councillor John Gilligan on Thursday 20th at 7 pm in the LSAD Gallery, Limerick School of Art and Design, Clare St. Campus, Limerick.
A number of events will also be taking place during the week to coincide with the exhibition including, a talk on current justice issues by the national advocacy group Justice for Magdalene (Monday, 24 October, 7 pm), tours of the building, radio discussions etc.

The show runs Thursday 20th October to Friday 28th October (excl. Saturday and Sunday)
