Our Partners
AN OVERVIEW
A Shannon Consortium initiative,
MarketLink is a collaboration between LIT’s Department of Business, Careers Office and the Enterprise Acceleration Centre (EAC). The programme is supported by the Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF) and has secured matching financial support from the Enterprise Boards in the Mid West region. Limerick City Market Trustees are a key external partner in the programme.
MarketLink is designed to engage with 3rd level students on a structured basis such that entrepreneurial behaviours, skills and attitudes are developed on a practical basis. The key differentiating factor for programme participants is that they will be assisted to research and plan a market stall business in Limerick which they will then manage on a group basis for a day at the end of the programme. MarketLink also incorporates a business plan competition and awards ceremony.
Application to join the MarketLink programme is open to all students in Limerick Institute of Technology from all four schools: School of Built Environment; School of Art & Design; School of Science, Engineering and IT; and the School of Business and Humanities. It is envisaged that 40 participants will be offered places on our second programme which will run during February and March 2010. The workshops will run on Wednesdays evenings (plus two Tuesdays).
The programme workshops reflect the objective of the programme to provide participants with an overview and appreciation of the fundamentals of small business:
- Entrepreneurship in Action
- Best Practice Business planning
- How to communicate with Customers?
- Being successful in Presentations
- Formal Case Study Exercise
- Careers Elective Workshop
A key ingredient of this programme is that local successful local entrepreneurs and SME Managers will attend the workshops to meet, present and engage in a question and answer sessions with participants. The programme will also sponsor the preparation of formal case studies on a company based in the Mid-West region to highlight how Irish SMEs can successfully overcome challenges and leverage opportunities to successfully compete in local, national and international markets.
MarketLink is an ideal starting point for students who may have an interest in setting up their own business or working in a family business at some stage in the future. It will also be valuable for students with ambitions to work with small enterprise in areas such as product design, marketing, accounting, human resources. As a multidisciplinary programme, MarketLink aims to be relevant to all students as the majority of graduates will secure employment with professional organisations that provide products and services to SMEs.

Limerick Institute of Technology gratefully acknowledges the receipt of financial support from the Enterprise Boards in the Mid-West region and the Strategic Innovation fund as part of the National Development Plan 2007-2013 towards delivery of this programme.
