26th January
An innovative project was launched on Tuesday, 26-Jan-2010 by the Professional Cookery graduating class of 2009 from Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT). Foodle.ie has proved a truly successful project for its team. Produced as both a book and available online at Foodle.ie it hosts a range of tried and tested recipes, suited to all needs. Each recipe was written, tested and improved upon by the students themselves. Whether it’s a ‘One pot Wonder’, ‘Posh Nosh’ or a recipe to accommodate guests with a restricted diet, Foodle.ie has it all!
The entire project from its conception to the beautiful recipes and images you see on Foodle.ie was designed and managed by students of LIT as part of a major interdepartmental project. The project began with the second year students in Professional Cookery. The students each devised the recipes, worked through the design process and prepared and devised the concept for the food shot that appears with their recipe on Foodle.ie.
The web site and book reflect the areas that the students cover in the Professional Cookery Course, including different cookery styles (Culinary skills and standards) and special needs diets (Nutrition). The ‘One Pot Wonder’ dishes came from the students themselves – well, no student likes the idea of too much washing up! The focus of the areas was to make the web site appealing to all visitors, be they academics, non academics, students or someone looking for that unique, but easy-to-follow, recipe to impress their friends.
LIT prides itself on its central educational philosophy of active learning. Active learning means all students have the opportunity to reach beyond the theory of their subjects and apply themselves to the practical demonstration of what they are learning. A quick glance at the range and level of professionalism displayed in the recipes on Foodle.ie is a tribute to the application of active learning at LIT. The students themselves have gone that extra mile showing future employers their level of accomplishment and commitment to their industry.
Commenting at the launch of Foodle.ie, Dr. Maria Hinfelaar President of LIT said, “LIT prepares learners for fulfilling and challenging futures, fostering the professional, intellectual, social, cultural and personal development of the individual. Without interdepartmental co-operation the Foodle.ie project would not have become a reality- Welcome to the LIT Family- Love IT, Live IT, Learn IT!”
As Foodle.ie came to life, the team expanded to include, photographers; Derek O’Sullivan (Technician, School of Art and Design) and Ian Beehan (Graduate School of Science, Engineering and IT). The marketing and design team who developed the Foodle.ie book, Colin McLean, Michelle Moloney and Jennifer McKnight. The IT development and design team who created Foodle.ie web site, Niall Corcoran and Noreen Vaughan.
