Lapland
2001
A group
of 5 lecturers and 17 students spent almost two weeks in Lapland.
The first two days in Ivalo, the next two in Utsjoki by the Norwegian
border and the last seven days again in Ivalo in beautiful Nanguvuono.
The
group visited the surrounding areas and discussed the theme of borders.
They also confronted borders of their own by jumping in the frozen
lake, going to sauna together and coping with the darkness and the
cold. They also worked with ice and learned how to use the tools
involved.
Together
and individually they worked with their own themes using ice, performance,
video, photography, drawing...
The Burren, 2002
A group
of 23 students and lecturers traveled to The Burren area of Ireland
for 12 days. After a happy reunion and getting to know the new members
in the group the first few days were spent getting to know the area
and visiting some of the local sights.
The
Burren landscape inspired people to work with different sites in
very different ways. Quite a few people used video and photography
in their work. Some did work with the local materials, limestone,
seaweed or things found on the beaches.
The
theme of borders wasnt so much discussed with the whole group
this time but more in smaller groups. The themes that came up in
Lapland were continued in some peoples work. Now there was
some continuity, something to look back to. The new members of the
group and of course the new scenery and culture changed the dynamics
of the group in a significant way.
Estonia
2003
The
third part of the Be Bounded By
project was arranged in east,
in Estonia. After a group gathering in Tallinn and visiting the
Tallinn Kunstiakadeemia and museums the group of 4 lecturers and
16 students settled in a place called Ontika Mois. It is a seaside
place near the Gulf of Finland and the town Kohtla-Järve. From
Ontika we took trips to the nearby towns: Jöhvi, Sillammäe
and Narva. The town of Narva is at the border of Estonia and Russia.
For
this intensive course we had a clear goal to build up an exhibition
into a gallery in the town of Kohtla-Järve. Students had brought
with them art works from the earlier workshops of the project. The
new participants made work out of the material and objects they
found from the area. All the students collected new material from
the surrounding area for further work in their home college.
