Public House

The Sculpture & Combined Media Department in collaboration with SAUL (School of Architecture at UL) a five week public art project - Public House.

This collaborative project is themed around the title “Public House” and, while we wish to realise complete The Public House brings into play perceived ideas of the institution, of the collective, of the
domestic, of the façade. But it also addresses directly the locus for the collective in Irish life ‐ society’s fraternity, its love affairs, its most joyful camaraderie; its heartache, its depression and its most pervavsive illness, alcoholism. It is the place where the individual can feel most connected to others, or its opposite, deep isolation in the face of the gregarious, the social group.
Students are asked to formulate a response to these issues, to work ‘with’ the house itself, to use the
domestic metaphor, or to use the house as signifier.
