Access Service
Limerick Institute of Technology is committed to promoting equitable access to and successful participation in higher education for all members of society. Directed by the office of the Registrar, the LIT Access agenda flows from a philosophy of integration and social inclusiveness. Reporting directly to the Academic Affairs and Student Services Manager, the Access Service is managed by Ms. Linda Barry, Access Officer.
The aim of the access service is to support widening access for underrepresented learners by delivering targeted strategies to promote, facilitate entry to and successful participation in higher education. These learner groups include:
- Learners who experience socio-economic disadvantage
- Learners with Disability and/or Specific Learning Difficulty
- Mature Learners
- Travellers and Ethnic Minorities
The role of the access service is to:
- Promote equal opportunities for access, participation and completion by delivering targeted strategies (pre and post entry) designed specifically to elicit the learners’ full potential so as to increase access to and success in higher education by individuals who are traditionally underrepresented.
- Meet prospective/current learners and ascertain which interventions may be required to enable entry to, and participation in the academic programmes of the Institute.
- Enable learners to participate in their chosen programme by sourcing and delivering reasonable accommodations.
- Ongoing dialogue with all stakeholder groups to acknowledge and address the broad array of academic, financial and personal barriers facing potential learners.
- Work in collaboration with the Student Support Services Team and Institute wide staff in the delivery of pre/post entry initiatives.
- Liaise with local and national education providers, statutory and voluntary agencies and local community groups to support access and participation in education in line with local and national strategic objectives.
