The Institute welcomes applications from students who have a disability.
“A student is disabled if he or she requires a facility which is not part of the mainstream provision of the college concerned, to enable participation in the college to the full extent of her or his ability/capabilities and without which she or he would be educationally disadvantaged in comparison to peers.” (HEA/AHEAD,1993)
Students are advised to contact the Access Officer to arrange an appointment to discuss the facilities or support services required. It shall be the responsibility of the student to arrange for and produce a *report before the Institute can provide any special educational requirements.
* Students who have a Specific Learning Difficulty (e.g. dyslexia) must provide Limerick Institute of Technology with a copy of their Educational Psychology Report (assessment within the last 3 years) clearly stating that the student has a specific learning difficulty.
PLEASE NOTE: Accommodations received for Leaving Certificate exams under the RACE scheme (Reasonable Accommodations in Certificate Exams) do not qualify a student for support in 3rd level. The appropriate Assessment referenced above must be provided.
* All other students with a disability must provide Limerick Institute of Technology with a recent report by a Medical Consultant/Specialist verifying their disability. Please note that General Practitioner (G.P.) letters are generally not accepted as suitable medical evidence.
The purpose of providing a report to Limerick Institute of Technology is to assess the relevant support which the student might require in the context of the impact that the students disability may have on his/her academic studies. It is therefore necessary that the report should outline:
Where a disability becomes apparent during a student’s attendance at Limerick Institute of Technology, the student should contact the Access Officer who will support the student and assist with any necessary information.
The Access Service will take every reasonable action to ensure that specific requirements are met and that all students are able to participate as fully as is practicable in the academic and social life of the Institute. Supports available to student with a disability who register with the Access Service include:
Learning Support Tutor for student’s with specific learning difficulties
*PLEASE NOTE: Where Personal Assistants are required, this must be organised personally by the student, prior to commencing your college course. The college will process an application on behalf of the student, if required, to the SWD fund (Students with Disabilities) to cover the costs of hiring the personal assistant. Please contact the Access Officer for further details.
We look forward to meeting you and welcoming you to Limerick Institute of Technology.
